Which bits can I/can’t I remove from a free wordpress theme?

Question by Skinny Latte: Which bits can I/can’t I remove from a free wordpress theme?
If I download a free theme from the wordpress website, do I have to leave in the links from the original author? Or are they all completely free to adapt?

Ideally I want to download a free theme that is suitable for a client, remove the links to the original author, edit the theme and then sell it on. But I don’t know if the themes on the wordpress website allow you to do this or if you have to keep the link at the bottom that says something like “wordpress theme by ‘whoever’ “.

If this is not allowed does anybody know of a website where you can download completely free themes with no branding or links to authors etc? I am essentially looking for something a bit more than a shell of a template but without the links.

you can’t remove the links from the footer, of free themes.
But you can purchase themes here:

and then you can modify what you want, because you bought the license. They are very good templates, all customizable! And there’s a good forum too!
