A search engine sends an automatic program (also known as a “spider” or a “robot”)to explore the World Wide Web, following the links, for the purpose of searching for information to build a database. Such programs are often
used to build automated indexes for the Web, allowing users to do keyword searches for Web documents.

A searcher makes a request for information with the use of a keyword or key phrase. The search engine evaluates the sites in its index, assessing which are the most relevant to the requested keyword or key phrase, and displays the results.

Search engine optimization, or SEO, is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a web site from search engines, usually in “natural” (“organic” or “algorithmic”) search results. Understanding how search algorithms work and what human visitors might search for is vital in the overall success of search engine optimization.

STEPS TO SEO:
1)Optimize your site for your target audience, not for the search engines. As hard as it may be to think this way, it is by far the best strategy in obtaining targetted traffic to your website. When someone types a word or phrase into the search engine search box, they are seeking specific information. The search engines present websites that pertain to the words typed into their search box. You need to optimize your site to meet the needs of these people, aka your target audience. So, how do you determine your target audience? When you created your site you already should have had an idea. If you created a website about perennial gardening to assist beginner gardeners, your audience consists of people who do not know much about perennial gardening. Look for studies online that might provide demographic information. Visit online communities, and forums where your target audience might hang out and read the discussions. This information will be crucial to your resulting website design, keyword research, and copywriting.

2) Do extensive research for your key words and phrases. What you may think are common search words and phrases may not be what your target audience use in their searches. Each page within your site should contain its own content and topic, therefore a different set of keywords and key phrases are essential for each page. Utilize keyword research tools such as KeywordDiscovery(keyword discovery.com) Google Adwords (www.google.com/adwords/) and Wordtracker (wordtracker.com/) to compile a list of the most relevant words and phrases for each page of your site.

3) Incorporate your keywords into each page’s unique Title tag. Back in the day, all the rage was putting keywords in title tags and the meta tags (description and keyword tags) within each pages source code. Today, however, it is felt that the description tag and keyword tag do not play quite as important a role as it once did. The title tag, on the other hand, still plays an important role in search engine optimization. Search engines will utilize the words and phrases found in the title tag to aid in the ranking of a website. Think of the title tag as the title of a book: the words or phrases should accurately reflect the contnet of the page.

4) The old saying “content is king” still holds strong. Content plays two important roles: Providing your visitors with the information they seek and provides other website owners a reason to want to include a link to your site within their site. Write compelling content for your pages, incorporating your keywords and key phrases. Please understand that there is no special keyword-to-overall-content ratio; simply write copy that your visitors are interested in and will make an emotuonal connection with. Your keywords and key phrases should fow naturally within the content, making sense to the reader. Other website owners will find your site interesting, insightful and complimentary to their visitors, therefore including a link within their website directing their visitors to your site. Search engines will pick up on the keywords within the content which will allow them to classify your site.

5) Importance of website architecture and navigation: A website’s architecture is the content and design or the blueprint of your website. Architecture should be focused on the needs of your visitors, paying particular attention to content, usability, interaction design, information architecture and overall aestetics. Navigation is the process of moving from one page to another and should be obvious to your site’s visitors; allowing visitors to find what they are seeking quickly. Remember…people tend not to read a website. They scan for key words and headings.

6) Don’t allow extra junk to get in the way of the search engines. Extra junk meaning heavy non-html code, javascript, graphics and Flash. While some search engines are “learning” to read some Flash and perhaps javascript, for the most part it is code that cannot be read. Whenever possible, move javascript to an external file. Utilize alt tags for all your
clickable images, creating a clear description of the image.

SEO doesn’t have to be expensive. But here’s what I have found:

    1. Its best to do some research as to what variables SEO consitutes so that you have a basic understanding. I am talking about on-page (keywords, meta-tags, titles, etc.) as well as off-page optimization (backlinks, etc.).

    2. Its also best to optimize each page of your site individually instead of “optimizing” your entire site as a whole.

    3. A step-by-step systematic approach is best.

I wrote about how I got to #1 in Google (in 2 months!) for a product I sell on my blog below:
