Question by Mr J Man: I really get nervous when looking applying for jobs?
I am an extremely honest person so if someone asks if I have experience in a certain area I do no want to lie and say that I do. I am a freelance programmer and for many years there hasn’t been a job I couldn’t complete. However I am not good with AJAX since I feel there is too much code to memorize for very small simple features and I believe it will be replaced with better technology soon. However when looking at some PHP job descriptions, they have these requirements:
# MUST have 3+ years PHP experience.
# MUST have 3+ years of experience in Internet business application development using Microsoft software solutions
# MUST possess 3+ years of experience with the following: OOP, design patterns, database design, and has worked with at least one of the existing PHP frameworks: symfony, CakePHP, or Zend.
# MUST have 3+ years experience working with JS libraries (jQuery preferred) and building scalable websites
# MUST have 2+ years experience with HTML/CSS/Ajax
# 1+ years of experience using Drupal and Magento
# MUST have portfolio/samples of work
Even though I am considered an expert programmer by hundreds of clients, the only things I know on that list of skills are php, css, html, and a little javascript (not including mysql). Those are the only languages needed to build any site, all that extra junk is useless. So I can build sites but I do not know all of the other bells and whistles, and I did try to sit down and study more but I got so bored that I couldn’t continue. How should I proceed?
